What is ATS Score?

An ATS score is a numerical or ranked measure of how closely a candidate's application matches the requirements of a job within applicant tracking software.

Not every employer publishes or even uses a visible score, but many systems rank applicants internally. The score typically reflects keyword overlap with the job description, required qualifications, years of experience, and answers to knockout questions. Some tools add weighting for preferred skills or location.

Job seekers often encounter 'ATS score' through third-party CV checkers that estimate match strength. These estimates are useful directional signals, not official results from the employer's system. Real ATS scoring is proprietary and varies by vendor and configuration.

Chasing a perfect score can backfire if you stuff keywords unnaturally. Recruiters still read shortlisted CVs, and obvious keyword padding looks dishonest. A better goal is strong alignment on must-have requirements plus clear evidence in your experience bullets.
