What is Functional CV?

A functional CV emphasises skills and achievements grouped by theme rather than presenting work history in strict chronological order.

Functional CVs foreground what you can do — leadership, technical expertise, project delivery — sometimes with minimal detail on when and where each skill was acquired. Career changers and people returning after a long break occasionally use this style to steer attention away from unrelated job titles.

The trade-off is recruiter scepticism. Many employers distrust functional formats because they can obscure gaps or lack of recent relevant experience. ATS parsers may also struggle to extract a clear timeline, weakening keyword context tied to specific roles.

In most UK job markets, a functional CV is the exception, not the rule. If you use one, keep employment history available in some form and be prepared to discuss dates honestly at interview.

Consider a combination CV instead if you need to highlight transferable skills without sacrificing chronology. Cvaluate can flag whether your chosen format risks parsing errors on a given application.
