What is Personal Statement?

A personal statement is a narrative section — common on university or graduate applications — explaining your motivations, background, and suitability for a course or role.

On a CV aimed at experienced hires, 'personal statement' often overlaps with the professional summary. In graduate recruitment, it may be a separate longer essay about career intent and relevant projects. Context determines length and tone.

Effective personal statements are specific. They reference what you want to do, why this employer or programme, and evidence from study or work that supports your claim. Generic enthusiasm without examples weakens the application.

Unlike cover letters, personal statements may be stored as fixed text in application portals and compared across cohorts. Avoid informal language and ensure every paragraph advances your case.

If you are unsure whether to use a summary or a fuller statement on your CV, default to a concise professional summary for corporate roles. Use Cvaluate to check that opening text includes role-relevant keywords.
