What is Applicant?
An applicant is a person who has submitted — or is in the process of submitting — a formal application for a job vacancy.
In ATS terminology, you become an applicant when your record exists in the employer's system, usually after you complete an online form or upload a CV. The same person may be an applicant for multiple requisitions at one company simultaneously, each tracked separately.
Applicant status progresses through stages: received, under review, interview, offer, rejected, or withdrawn. Not all employers expose these stages to candidates; silence often means you remain in a pool without advancement.
High applicant volume per role means individual applications receive limited attention. Standing out requires meeting stated requirements, clear formatting, and tailoring — not merely meeting the minimum to apply.
Treat each application as a distinct record. Reusing an old CV without aligning to the new job description leaves you competing as a generic applicant rather than a strong match.
